Artist Statement: These stunning Forest Red Tails are sadly critically endangered due to losses of habitat, cars, nesting competition, animal attacks, and poaching. They mate for life, up to 50 years, but they breed slowly, so increasing the species’ numbers has proven difficult.
Their distinctive screech gave them their Noongar name, the Karrak, and is also old bush-lore indicating rain is coming. To see them fly overhead is an absolute privilege, and I hope to have paid homage to their beauty in my artwork.

Materials and process: I use high quality pastels and pastel pencils to create my detailed artworks. The base is always Pastelmat Board by Clairefontaine , and I have my works professionally framed with top quality UV glass (Tru Vue-Ultra Vue-UV70) to prevent the sun from spoiling the image and to lessen the amount of light reflection. The matte board is there for the archival purpose of drawing moisture away from the artwork. This way you can be assured of a clear and bright image for years to come. You may also like to know that a percentage of the purchase price will be donated to the The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, or Northern Rivers Seabird Rescue, as I support these charities with my art sales.

Artist Statement: This pastel artwork captures an Azure Kingfisher in a fragile eco-system, a deep and dark mangrove forest. My artwork has contrasted a monochrome background with the bright blues of the bird, thereby focusing on it and the purity of its environment, hoping to elicit in the viewer an urgent need to protect our critical coastal habitats for future generations.

Artist Statement: Recently I spent many hours beside my father in law as he lay in bed dying. At the age of 94 he was filled with grace, gratitude and peace. He told his family that he loved us and was ready to leave. As I held hands and sat with him I understood how special these final moments were. The memory of his empty bed stayed with me and I created this drawing in response to that time. Nasturtiums were blooming in my garden and I filled the still, empty room with their flamboyant shapes and colours.

Materials and process: I made this drawing on 300gsm Arches paper, using pastel and pencils. It is float mounted in a black stained timber frame under glass, with the edges of the beautiful cotton rag paper showing.

Artist Statement: Our reality is made up of myths and stories, some with more gravitas than others. “Truth” is based on perception, bias and common agreement.

22% of women experience sexual violence since the age of 15, yet our safety is constantly thrust back as our own responsibility.

“What was she wearing?” “Was she drinking?” “She should’ve known better.”

To be a victim and to have failed to follow these ever-changing “rules” results in the most prominent and common of myths: “she was asking for it.”

Materials and process: Graphite on paper.
