Inanna and the Huluppu Tree

136. Inanna and the Huluppu Tree

Artist: Venessa Skye
Instagram: Insta – @middle_pocket_pottery

Artwork size (in cm): H 21 x W 16
Artwork Price: $680

Artist Statement: The story of ‘Inanna and the Huluppu Tree’ is over 4000 years old, written in stone, never changed. It depicts a Woman, a tree, a garden and a serpent. It is believed to be the origin of ‘The Garden of Eden’ story. It is so uncanny it moved me, Though the outcome of this story is far more positive for Inanna who is made a queen.

Having images that were depicted with this origin story, on a vessel, hidden beneath layers of mist, feels to display the reality of this hidden reflection.

Materials and process: Using an iron based clay, a combination of slips and glazes are applied then the piece was woodfired for 80 hours in an Anagama kiln.
The pink is a blush of copper from a piece that was intentionally placed in the flame path ahead of this piece.
Shell marks are formed when the piece is fired on it’s side, on seashells.
There are a few green runs that have occured as the ash has melted, using particular timbers in the kiln can achieve green natural ash glaze in a long firing.
The wood used is a species the local farmers cull and burn, using this timber to fire the kiln gives the flame purpose.

Artwork size (in cm): 16cm x 25cm
Artwork Price: $500

Artist Statement: My inspiration comes from the goddess within every woman and the magnificence of motherhood. As a ceramic artist, I am honoured to channel creative energies through this medium, but my primary identity is that of a mother. I hold deep admiration for all mothers and the delicate balancing act we perform to manage the myriad facets of our busy lives. To me, the mother embodies a mythic and, in many ways, a supernatural presence. We should celebrate her and rejoice in her strength and resilience.

Artwork size (in cm): 24w x 30h x 30d
Artwork Price: $1,500

Artist Statement: I found some beautiful rich, brown textured clay from Spain and wanted to work with it.
I automatically thought of a beautiful brown woman. It wasn’t hard to find some stunning photos of Ethiopian woman for my source.
Starting with an idea I find once that happens the sculpture builds itself. A strong, androgynous woman named Amara was the outcome.
I love her – her jewellery is made from petrified wood that I found in a fishing village on the Mexican east coast.

Materials and process: Amara is made from a rich Brown Water Based Clay that was imported from Spain. She is hand built. She is bisque fired with no glaze.
Her jewellery I made from petrified wood I found many years ago on the east coast of Mexico.

Artwork size (in cm): 29 x 35 x 26cm
Artwork Price: $850

Artist Statement: Spirit Animal is a creature from the past, the present and the future. It exists in that mythological realm where time is non-linear and even irrelevant.
My recent ceramic works have been focused on this idea and are in the form of what I refer to as “contemporary relics”. Their weathered surfaces resembles monuments and ruins and thus invokes a sense of history, where cultural narratives lie.

Materials and process: Hand built stoneware with weathered bronze glaze.

Artwork size (in cm): 35cm Width 37cm Height
Artwork Price: $1,500

Artist Statement: I wanted to capture the beautiful childhood innocence of a fairy home, filled with warm light and sparkles, these sweet and magical mythical creatures take me back to a time where the world was good, and things were much more simple.
Slowly our childhood lens of magic and wonder dissolves to allow us to see the other side of the coin, as we are confronted with tragedies, loss and disillusionment. The cracks begin to show…..

Rock Cycle

148. Rock Cycle

FIRST PLACE

Artist:  Suvira McDonald
Instagram: @studiosuvira
Website: suviramcdonald.com

Artwork size (in cm): 42H X 31W X 22D
Artwork Price: $1,850

Artist Statement: Rock Cycle was inspired by walking in the ancient rock formations of the Lost City, located in the East Kimberley. The formations are unique even amongst the vast and innumerable other sites of the region. The geological or deep time, scientific account for these formations, an example of ‘karst’, is erosion or weathering over 1.3 billion years. An account or dream story of the local indigenous people would be quite otherwise, of course, and it is not my privilege to make that account.

Materials and process: The work is a ceramic construction, fired over three days in a traditional wood fired kiln. The colour variations are the result of both applied glazes and another glaze formed by the floating acacia ash randomly deposited onto the sculpture and which then melts into the delicate glassy green hue, forming yet another layer. The actual ceramic process is laborious and very time-consuming, producing subtle results unachievable in any other way.

Motherhood she is the Story of us All

m

149. “Motherhood” she is the Story of us all

Artist: Johnny Pink

Artwork size (in cm): 540 x 34 x 90
Artwork Price: $1,500

Artist Statement: I am highly right brain minded and since childhood I have noticed that I see patterns in things. I am 71 now and over the years I have created a hundred or more very special pieces. I rarely enter art competitions. I was amassing a large collection of carvings to exhibit however the 2022 floods, took most of those away. When creating, I may see a hint of something lurking within the wood or like here, I have a piece for years and then suddenly I realize what it is and here” Motherhood” appeared.

Materials and process: Camphor Laurel has long been acknowledged worldwide as a gift between artists and poets. The emperor Julius Ceaser wore a replicated image in gold of a laurel wreath upon his head. Simply hang and display my piece in a place where she will be widely appreciated.

Motherhood.

The myth, the story
Written by Johnny Pink
Fathers plant the seed; however, it is our mothers, that birth the story of
our lives.
My own mother Dot Pink (rip) encouraged me at a very young age to find
out who I am.
“Don’t come running to me for help if you hurt yourself, she’d say… you
work it out.
“Pay attention to what you’re doing” tough love was how she grew; it was
all she knew.
I loved and respected my mother, as it was my mother’s love that
anchored my story.
History mostly acknowledges records and lauds the story of mankind for
all to remember,
Her story is creation, she is the myth, the legend, the mystery
and the story of us all.
An omen is a God-given unfathomable mystery. As it’s open to every
person’s experience, it’s unable to truly be understood. Curiously, when
we put a W in front of the word omen, the myth and the story, now comes
into empowering delight-filled self-presence.
As a sculptural artist that has carved since the 60’s, I read the patterns in
the grain. A piece may instantly reveal itself, or it may sit untouched for
years, until one day the three phases of recognition reveal what was
hidden and AH a thing recognised, becomes AHA a pattern understood
and then as the work begins AHA HA HA occurs, and in this case,
“Motherhood”
The sculpture appeared.
Medium; Camphor Laurel

Artist Statement: Inspired by the ancient myth of Gaia, the Earth Mother, this sculpture embodies the nurturing essence of our planet. The flowing glazes represent life-giving waters, while the textured valleys and mountains evoke the Earth’s natural rhythms. Through soft, calming hues and a feminine form, the piece invites contemplation of our deep connection to nature and the mysteries that lie within. As an artist, I seek to capture the spirit of the Earth in its most serene and powerful form.

Visitation Relics

151. Visitation Relics

Artist: Denis Hopking
Instagram: denishopking@instagram

Artwork size: 60  x 20 x 30
Artwork Price: $750

Artist Statement: Aliens are very much the discussion by scientists, astrophysicists, archaeologists and researchers, especially in ancient art. My aim is to ask observers to consider my intuitive interpretation. I’ve been a clay and fire sculptural artist for over 40 years, plus I’ve enjoyed teaching art in Steiner schools and to Steiner Teacher Training and teaching stone sculpture at Summer and Winter Schools.

Materials and process: A high fire clay is used to model work that has initially been thrown on a potter’s wheel. A sculptural patina is used to enable a visually deep perspective to emerge.

152. God is a Wild Woman With Starfish in Her Hair

Artist: Christine de Brenni

Artwork size (in cm): 60 x 30 x 2.5 cm
Artwork Price: $750

Artist Statement: I was inspired by the ocean, night skies, dreaming stories and Celtic mythology. The mosaic is an exploration of ephemeral elements alongside the more persisting element earth.
It explores intangible concepts of science, alchemy, philosophy, spirituality and how story helps us to make sense of all of this.
This is done via the concrete enduring medium of mosaic but using light, depth and distance from the work inviting the viewer to perhaps question what they are seeing and emotions evoked.

Materials and process: This mosaic was created using the following tesserae – Iridised glass tiles, micro glass tiles, wavy gold tesserae, ceramic glazed pebbles, cinca, Byzantine soft stone tiles, clear glass strips and tiles with photo backing, effetre glass stringers and noodles, a bespoke glass fusion by Martin Cheek on Wedi board, a strong, light weight substrate. It is unframed. Not suitable for exterior hanging.

Black Moon

153. Black Moon

Artist: Dean Stewart
Website: www.deanstewartart.com
Instagram: @deanstewartart

Artwork size (in cm): 85 x 121
Artwork Price: $850
Contact for Purchase of Prints: deanandrewstewart@gmail.com

Artist Statement: Dean Stewart (b. 1969, Australia) is an artist and designer based in Ballina, New South Wales.

Dean’s approach is grounded in the collection, curation and re-purposing of found objects, salvage materials and discarded remnants into three-dimensional, mixed media and 3D sculptural works which acknowledge the origins and authenticity of the materials and objects used while transforming them into considered, contemporary assemblages.

Materials and process: “Black Moon” uses blackened, reclaimed timber offcuts mounted to a rectangular timber, unframed back board in a layered, three-dimensional approach to enhance not only the sculptural forms of the timber pieces themselves but the spaces and shadows which are formed by the pieces and the layering process and the play of light across the piece.

Key to the piece is the choice of a singular charcoal colour and matt finish which works to blend and connect each piece to the next, thereby creating a holistic sculptural piece.

I was drawn to the myths and stories surrounding a black moon, which is a rare astronomical event when there are two new moons in a single calendar month or the third new moon in a season with four new moons.

In some aspects of paganism, particularly amongst Wiccans, the black moon is considered to be a special time when any rituals, spells, or other workings are considered to be more powerful and effective.

And our own Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have constructed oral narratives of the celestial bodies that appear in the Australian night sky. In many Aboriginal communities, the Moon is considered to represent both a man and a woman. It is associated with fertility, death and initiation ceremonies.

I was drawn to representing this subject as it challenges the viewer to look at the moon in a new way, much like my approach as an artist is centred around repurposing founds objects and remnant materials into new assemblages, inviting the viewer to experience these materials in fresh and surprising new ways.

“Black Moon” was created especially for the Ocean Shores Art Expo 2024.

154. Key Holders: a Tapestry of Memory and Resiliance

Artist: Coral Larke
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coralynlarke/

Artwork size (in cm):
150cm High x 50 cm wide
Artwork Price: $1000

Artist Statement: Keyholders explores displacement and longing through a fusion of materials. Keys symbolize the dreams of refugees yearning to return home, each one a silent testament to lost connections. The wire dress embodies fragility and resilience shown in the face of immeasurable suffering, string art weaves together narratives of hope and memory. Together, these elements reflect the complexities of identity, belonging, and the enduring human spirit in the face of immense suffering.

Materials and process: The work is based on a wire frame formed into a dress. Woven, hand coloured string zigzags between points within the skirt, forming geometric images. Vintage keys adorn the bodice. A Palestinian embroidered border outlines a cape that was once beautiful curtains that I couldn’t bring myself to discard. The design was worked to indicate the dignity associated with an official position,in this case a mythological holder of keys that contains the heart strings of those who wish to go home.
