Website: www.cherylbailey.com.au
Artwork size (in cm): 60 x 70
Artwork Price: $590
Artist Statement: i attended an Artist in Residency in Morocco deep in the Sahara this year. Nestled in the rugged beauty of North Africa’s desert lies a treasure trove of ancient stories. The Berber people have a rich cultural heritage. This hare wanted to eat fresh grass, but that’s where the hunters were. He thought if he listened while he chewed he would be safe. After a while all he could hear was the sound of his teeth, he was tense and decided this was no life, and chose to go where he can eat in peace.
Materials and process: I travelled to Morocco with unstretched canvas. I laid the bare canvas on the Sahara desert to paint using acrylic paints, matching the colour of the background to the sand. The foreground is inspired by the unusual plants growing out of the sand with tiny flower buds. After I arrived home I repainted some of the Hare using oil paint to give more definition, inspired by Hans Hoffmann’s A Hare in the Forest. The canvas was stretched and framed by The Mobile Framer in Billinudgel.

115. A Landscape Curated, Oatlands
Artist: Heather Matthew
Website: https://heathermatthew.com
Instagram: @heathermatthewcom
Artwork size (in cm): 49 X 49
Artwork Price: $450
Artist Statement: I am interested in how a landscape holds stories of human occupation. During my artist residency in Oatlands, Tasmania, I discovered the town’s violent history and searched for a way to express a post-colonial viewpoint. I used the colonial paned windows to reveal a landscape that was curated to reflect societal thinking, viewed from the inside looking out. Peeling wallpapers that reveal convict’s chisel marks on the sandstone bricks are a reminder that under all the layering, history remains.
Materials and process: This work is an acrylic painting on canvas with a Tasmanian oak frame to complement the framing of the historical referenced landscape of Oatlands, Tasmania.
