#87 Aqueous

Artist: Mardi Browning

Artist Statement:
“Aqueous” has emerged from a series of prints that I have been creating this year inspired by our beautiful northern rivers landscapes. These recent works have evolved from observing our environments, sketching and taking photographs of land and rock formations, skyscapes, cloudscapes and the intricate weavings of interconnected creeks, wetlands, streams, waterfalls, rivers and ocean. Aqueous – a celebration of water, it’s transformative nature and it’s essential role in sustaining life.

Materials and Process:
In these recent works I have been exploring applying printmaking techniques using a range of natural found and recycled materials as well as salvaged waste. I have created this print “Aqueous” by using salvaged plastic packaging wrap which would have otherwise gone to landfill, as a body for applying oil based printing ink for texture and form. I chose the colour Pthalo Blue for water. In small quantities, water appears colourless, but water actually has an intrinsic blue colour caused by slight absorption of light at red wavelengths.

I have used Oil based Gamblin printing ink in color Pthalo Blue, applied to salvaged plastic wrapping waste, and printed through printing press onto 300gsm 100% Cotton Cold Press Watercolour Paper, with Timber frame and glass.
