Artist Statement:
This painting is inspired by the aesthetic and rhetoric of 1950’s “how to be a housewife” advertisements and posters. In a reclamation of the narrative, done in classic Aussie fashion (making fun of serious things) I design works with human-animal hybrids, referencing specific animals that women are sometimes referred to (birds, cows, cougars!). Simultaneously, I acknowledge how far our society has in terms of expected roles and behaviour of women, and choose to also celebrate our journey to equality.

Acrylic on canvas, sealed surface, with pine wood stretcher frame.
